Carrying TSA locks is never required by law.

If you don’t need a TSA lock, then how does it work? If they discover anything suspicious, they simply permit the TSA to open your bag. The TSA owns the master keys for many international airports, so they can be used anywhere.

The majority of people are under the impression that luggage locks are very ineffective. Any moderately prepared thief will be able to deal with them because there are simple ways to circumvent them.

TSA-approved locks are even worse in terms of safety. The Master Key Leak

It would be unethical to discuss TSA locks without addressing the 2014 and 2015 master key leaks. After all, if the keys have been stolen, how can a TSA lock function at all?

A picture of seven of the eight TSA master keys, all produced by Travel Sentry, was uploaded to The Washington Post in 2014. Within a short time, people began 3D printing copies of these keys from the image. The picture was taken down quickly, so finding it is now difficult, but the files for these keys are not. This leak did not contain the single Safe Skies TSA lock.

That’s bad, but it was a while ago, didn’t involve every master key, and they probably made a lot of new master keys since then, right? Issue settled?

The final master key was leaked by hackers Johnny Xmas, DarkSim905, and Nite 0wl in a way that the TSA could never have anticipated. So how did they achieve this? Did they get into the mainframe of the TSA? How do you get around encryption and firewalls? Another movie-based jargon for hackers?

No. They only bought a bunch of physical TSA locks and worked out what was going on. However, why did they do so?

Computers are given a “key” to decode the nonsense created by data encryption, which transforms data into nonsense. Similar to physical locks and keys, it is. Companies like Apple have requested their own set of “keys” to decrypt data for government agencies like the FBI.

Nite 0wl, Johnny Xmas, and DarkSim905 wanted to make people aware of how dangerous this was because it sounded an alarm. They also realized that the metaphor was perfect when they learned about TSA lock master keys. The government wanted to handle data in the same way that the TSA handled physical locks.

How does an encryption-like TSA lock function

How then would a malicious hacker gain access to these data “master keys”? It turns out that all you need to do is collect a large amount of encrypted data, identify a common element among them, and determine the encryption key.

Additionally, the hackers did exactly that to these physical locks. They discovered, through trial and error, which key would open each one. The pin tumblers contained within these locks shared a certain shape. Additionally, the master key had to have that form. Therefore, how does a TSA lock prevent theft? It turns out badly.

The master lock system is prone to this problem. The procedure could be repeated, so it doesn’t matter if the TSA makes a lot of new master keys. It’s great that consciousness of this issue was raised, regardless of whether it came to the detriment of… fundamentally anybody approaching your gear lock.

Okay, that’s not very good. However, criminals had already compromised your safety by using the pen method to open your luggage. That makes you feel better, doesn’t it?
